I want to move out of Boston , MA; and find a nice family friendly neighborhood in NYC, I would like some suggestions on what neighborhoods are pretty decent. I currently pay 1300.00 for rent now not including utlities, so I would like something around the price.
By family-friendly do you mean you have a family and you will need an apt larger than a one-bedroom? If so, I basically agree that you are not going to find a 2 bedroom for $1300. There is a recent thread about finding a 2-bedroom for $1500. //www.city-data.com/forum/new-y...m-apt-nyc.html
Also, by family-friendly do you mean you have kids and they will need good schools?

janaki, you'll be hard pressed at $1300 if it's for a family. But it's not impossible. In many outlying areas of the outer boroughs, people are still doing it. It won't be proper for me to advise about illegal basements but I do believe that there are some cheap LEGAL attics/basements/ground floors in way out sections of Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island where you might be able to swing something.
BTW, did you somehow inadvertently put the MAD smile icon with your reference to Boston and the Smile/Happy icon with NYC or was correctly associated?
If you did put the respective icon with the intended city, I fear that you might be switching around icons after you check out housing in NYC.
I am looking for a safe family friendly enviroment. I am considering looking in New Jersey, cause it seems that The city is to expense for me. I would like some suggestions on what areas in Jersey that have good school systems.
Check into places like Fort Lee and Ridgefield Park that are not too far into New Jersey and have some reasonable rents, and respectable school systems. How far of a commute would be preferable? There are some other good areas in New Jersey that would meet your requirements for a family area and schools, but they are definitely longer commutes to the city.
It is tough to find a decent, family apartment in NYC at your stated price point, especially since there are trade-offs to get to that price level, be it housing condition or neighborhood condition.
You are better off looking to New Jersey, since you're more likely to find what you need there within a reasonable commute of NYC as opposed to staying in NY, since Westchester is the next county and tends to be expensive in its better family environments. The price range you seek in Westchester is going to be in Yonkers or Mount Vernon, most likely, unless you are very far out in Peekskill. These school systems tend to underperform their neighboring districts and have more problems as well, so the bargain prices of Mount Vernon and Yonkers don't work from a family perspective because of the schools, since both have areas that are perfectly fine and safe.

For what you're looking for, Boston suburbs are better than Jersey.
The OP never mentioned how many people are living in this hypothetical apartment. I guess it could be as few as 2 (the OP and one child) but I just wanted to mention that $1300 in Boston won't get you very far either. OP did say BOSTON and not a Boston suburb.
IMHO, the $1300 budget for an apartment needs to go up (and would need to for an apartment-seeker in either city - NYC OR Boston, unless it's for a one bedroom in which case it may be do-able).
I was just about to suggest LI! Check out West Babylon and Lindenhurst.
