It's even more popular than in Japan! Those stores with very small spaces, with stools facing the kitchen. And the noodles! They are just instant chemical noodles, with a few slices of meat, and massive amount of MSG. In Japan, only the poorest of the poor would resort to eating this. Yet in NYC, why is it so popular! These noodle bars are always filled with people, especially caucasian males and females. There's a new one opened recently called like "Ippoudo", and on its opening day, the line stretched across the block. People line up to taste MSG soup and noodles? And one bowl will not even fill you up.
Do not understand, totally do not understand.

You guys are so quick to judge. Maybe they just like it because it's good.

It's good, it's cheap and it's quick - so it's lunch!
It's not the same as the dehydrated stuff, either...the soba noodles are fresh!

Is there a reason for this? I think it's purely psychological.

It's not necessary to use big words like "psychological." There's a much shorter word that describes the ramen phenomenon. And that word is "trend."
