My family needed some rec space and some space my eldest son was pleading for. So we built a TV room, office and full bath in the basement.

Now one of my neighbors and I'm 99% sure who, reported me for an illegal conversion.

The inspector made a surprise visit that I missed and left a notice.

What should I expect when the inspector does come?

The place has never been rented out or anything, just used sparingly throughout the week.

Are there any steps I should take before I schedule the inspection?

Thanks In Advance.

If you did this without a permit, you've got some 'splainin' to do...and you're going to have to make it adhere to code. Not to mention the higher tax assessment you're going to get along with a potential fine.

I had a contractor do the work about 11 years ago. I don't even know if the guys still in business or if he obtained the proper permits. I just paid the money and approved the work done.

Would the city have me on record if the contractor did attain a permit?

They should...but you'd still need a C of O if that was done...

Just an update for those who found themselves in the same situation I did.

I hired a contractor who knows about legalization and he said all I needed to do was rip out the tub and recess the pipes.

So I had him do that right before my scheduled inspection.

Inspector came by yesterday and said nothing was wrong, no violations.

And I looked up the permits for my house and the contractor I hired years ago never obtained permits for the basement work. Ill be making sure next time around.
