Is this station generally safe well into the night (12 AM to say, 3 AM)?
I used to live near the 168th stop and that seemed more crowded into the night, but sometimes sketchy past 11 PM ish. My concern with 181st late at night is the long haul on the escalaters and no one else being around when you get of the train (answers relating to both weekday and weekend evenings would be appreciated). Thanks.
I'm gussing you're talking about 181 street station along the A line. I haven't been there in a while, but it seems to be "okay" for the most part. There is usually a few people down there and I think there is a 24 hour station attendant down there.

oh yea, sorry about that. I meant A train. I was also wondering if I would tend to be riding alone after 11 PM or 12 AM ish on the train itself, ie whether most people would be getting off at 168th and the train would be empty-ish.
I've taken the A train to 190th Street a few late nights, and there have always been plenty of people getting off at 181st Street. I think you'd be fine, certainly until midnight or so.
Stupid question -- where is the escalator? When I get off at 181st Street, I use the northern exit where you walk out on the street, or take elevators up.

When you get out of the train and make a right and go all the way to the end. The escalators are long enough to be another train ride in and of themselve LOL. I just moved here and like it a lot, but assume a lot of folks go downtown for its nightlife and when the come back late at night, they haven't been hassled on the train itself or in the station?
I've gotten on and off there a few times late at night, though not recently. It seems okay, never had any problems and there were always a few other people around.
Thanks for your insight everyone. I just arrived from my first "after dark" trip at the 181st station and it was fine (then again, 8:30 PM isn't really LATE or anything, but definitely felt fine). I just remembered thinking to myself a few times (during the day) if walking that long stretch on the upstairs walkway or anywhere along the escalator was going to be safe if no one else were around, but seems to be alright, at least on a Sunday. I definitely had a shadier vibe about the 1 line at 168 late nights after 11 PM (ie with no one attending in the elevators sometimes).
