I have a great job here in NYC but I’m pretty much tired of living around the same area for 29 years. So I am moving by May end of June the latest. I would like to find a job in Central Philly but it’s not as easy as I thought. In the meantime I would like to commute from Philly to NYC but I don't how much way would be cheaper.

I do not want to spend over $300.00 in commuting back and forward because it’s not worth it.

I was thinking of driving half way to NJ then taking NJ transit to NY.
Does anybody knows which part of NJ would be best?

Are you nuts trying set a commuting record? Pick a city and stay in it. Philly is a good choice if looking for a drop in class and a drop in cost of living. Do not move there till you find work.

Philly to NYC is a long haul for a commute. I have lived in both places and traveled back and forth dozens of times. The NJ transit train terminates in Trenton NJ. You can start the public transportation leg of your hellish commute there.

That is one suck-tastic commute. Well over 2 hours each way if using mass transit. Ugh ugh ugh.

I wouldn't do it but:

There is some mini-train that goes into NJ that provides a transfer to a PA train--it is about half the Amtrak fare (the train is at Penn Station). I can't remember the name of the mini-train, it might just be part of the NJ Transit System.

I was always on per diem and not enough to get me where the d'n Gov. wanted me to go so I discovered this alternative and no reservations necessary.

The train in PA is the R7 line of Septa which is miserably slow.

Yup, you're right but cheaper.

I bet you all she is kidding about that New York-Philadelphia commute. She can't be serious.

Plus, I like Philadelphia and everyone's different, but... why would anybody move from a low-crime, nice city like New York to one of America's murder capitals? Do lower prices and boredom justify a move?

Good points, Manhattan-ite. Philly is a mess. If you think the Bronx is bad, well then heheheh...

Philly is not a mess there are livable places there. Compared to New York the quality of life is higher in Philly. Philly is less crowded, has less traffic and a smaller rat race than New York. Did not see any crime when I lived there except for a few junkies shooting up in South Philly.

Center City in Philadelphia is actually quite nice. Rents in South Philadelphia are extremely reasonable. You can find a 2br apartment for way under $1,000, closer to $700-$800 in some cases. Philly is a much more laidback and definitely cheaper town than NYC.

Philadelphia is not the Bronx. North Philly and West Philly are somewhat Bronx-esque, but Center City, South Philly, and Northeast Philly are nice areas.

I think you are out of luck though with the commute, to be honest. Most people who do this commute take the Amtrak train which takes an hour to get from 30th street station to Penn Station. The monthly pass for this train used to cost about $300-400, I believe, but the price for it recently doubled and now I think the cost for the pass is around $700 per month.

Doing the SEPTA from 30th st to Trenton and switch to NJ Transit from Trenton to NY Penn Station is somewhat insane. It takes about 2 hrs each way.
