I grew up in Rutherford. It is a nice middle class town and the schools are decent. Not sure about daycare but lots of people there work so it must be around. You can take either the bus into the city or take the downtown train to Hoboken and switch to the Path. It is very safe and has sidewalks so you can walk everywhere if you were so inclined. Lovely trees give it a "Mayberry" feel and it is quite safe.
