I would suggest you drive through the area late at night (at least after dark) and park your car and just sit and observe. Do this on the actual street and the avenue and the nearby streets. It can tell you a lot. Get out of the car and just walk up the street, try to be as non descript as possible and feel the "vibe." Also do all of this more than once.

Now is a good time, before it gets too cold. And if it just happens to be a warmer than usual day, you should definitely make time to stake out the block.

Someone suggested specific questions you could ask. I would definitely do that. Try to speak to your potential neighbors. They would be the ones who would really know what's going on in the area and on the block.

The most reliable method is the simplest: if you don't feel safe there, then it's not safe. You cannot rely on anyone else to tell you how to feel about a given neighborhood.
