The way you guys are reacting....it's actually making me feel a bit better....maybe it's pretty safe after all....but then how do you explain all the muggings that's being talked about by the members on this forum?

I don't understand why you are acting like you never lived in NYC. Your first post on the forum said you worked on Wall Street and got laid off.
Were people holding a knife to your throat and demanding your wallet when you lived here before?
If someone has a knife or a gun and demands your wallet, then I would strongly suggest you give it to them. You lose perhaps $200 and have some hassle getting new cards sent out. On the other hand, if you pull out a knife at that stage you're risking them using their knife/gun on you. Is risking your own life really worth it for a few hundred bucks?
Whilst these things generally work out fine in the movies, getting into a knife fight with someone (or potentially several people) is a good way to get very dead, very fast.
Go hard or go home. Sig Sauer P226 .357Sig(the bigger the bang and muzzle flash= + + +) with the shoulder holster and 2 stickers on the wood grip. Jesus on the right and a smiley face on the left. Stainless steel so it won't stain, I guess, and to pistol whip people. Make sure you have your jacket open so they can see the tool, like they do in the movies. Many Hollywood documentaries on crime like Lethal Weapon and Die Hard are excellent references on self defense. Trust me...
My friend grew up in NYC and he said he's been mugged every year, since he was 15. He's 23 now and he said the first time, a group of 3 black guys (not to sound racist here) approached him by the subway, pointed a gun to his face, and demanded his wallet.
I don't know...maybe it's really not this bad in NYC...but if someone points a gun to my face in complete darkness where no one is around, I'd be pretty scared I'd get shot, even after giving them my wallet.
He is either lying or doing something wrong, seriously. Where does he live in NYC?
You're more likely to get yourself killed trying to get into a knifefight on the street than handing over your wallet without a fight.
Some people just have horrible luck, what can I say. I've lived here my whole life and never have been mugged, neither has anyone in my immediate family, or extended family for the matter.
IMO, I don't think its such a hot idea to come here if your going to be all jumpy about it and expect somethign bad to happen to you...
