I don't think people realize how expensive it is. I lived in Paris France for 5 years and even with the dollar/euro ratio I found a nice large studio in the center of Paris...Le 2eme. For about $800. So I was expecting the same price maybe $200 or $300 more. I also wasn't expecting having to make 40x the rent.

I just wanted to thank everyone for there help and I found a solution. Until I can actually afford my own place, I decided to live in a residence for women. It is like a dorm room with 2 meals a day and alot of other perks. My rent is about 1000 dollars i am located in the low W. 80's and the residence has everything I could possibly need including a music room, tv, laundry, food, room service, a roof deck etc etc. It keeps me in Manhattan, gives me the opportunity to meet new people and I am in a safe area and I am saving money because i don't need to buy food.

Thanks

Alot of people think NY is what they see on Friends, Sex and City, Gossip Girl.....Where everyone lives in Lofty apts, pays 500$ a month rent, shops allday long and party all night with No job....LOL!

And when they get here...NY has party for them alright, enough to make them want to run their asses back home! lol

When I dreamed of Manhattan I, like everyone else dreamed of nice big loft spaces for a reasonable price. Well I know that is not possible here, but i am willing to go as far as 20-30 min outside of Manhattan and I was wondering if it is reasonable to look for 700-900 sq ft apartment for under $1000. I don't want a neighborhood where I will get shot, or robbed. Just a nice big space. If you know any areas where I should look please tell me.

Thank you. i want to move as soon as possible.

The North and Northwest Bronx has alot of affordable apartments with nicer and safer neighborhoods than other parts of the Bronx.

The train ride is about 30 minutes which isn't really bad when you think about it.

Try looking in Woodlawn in the Bronx, Van Cortlandt Park, West Gunhill Road, Mosholu Parkway....these are all nicer areas of the Bronx....way less crime too.

W GunHill Rd is a bad pocket. A good pocket would be from Gun Hill to Mosholu Pkwy west of Bainbridge Ave.

Default Try Crown Heights Brooklyn

You should move to Brooklyn it is very cheap and affordable. Crown Heights is a great neighborhood you can find apartments for 750 to 850. Don't listen to people they are going to say it is unsafe please don't listen. My rent is 850 my building is so safe and clean.

A great place to consider which is convenient to Manhattan is Staten Island. The St. George area of Staten Island is a 30 minute free ferry ride away from Manhattan. The views in St. George are amazing. You have a panoramic view of the city and Brooklyn all the way to the Verrazano Bridge. There are many great restaurants and attractions in this neighborhood. Compared to other boroughs Staten Island is also considerably cheaper. There are many deals to be had in the hosuing market still.

No, it's NOT convenient for anyone working in Manhattan.

Occasionally on city-data I notice users with 0-5 previous posts pop in to a thread about a particular location - and touting said location in whatever way possible they think could lean a person to throwing money over there, in a way that sounds very contrived and fake. Such types of posts should be read skeptically!
