Does anyone work there? have some opinions about Bloomberg's redevelopment scheme?

Personally, I'm against it. There's hardly any industrial areas left here in the city. Not everybody can be a waiter, a hotel maid, or a store clerk, and those are (aside from the construction jobs which will be strictly temporary) the kinds of low wage BS jobs that a "convention center" will bring.

I think everyone would admit that would be great to have something nicer in Willets Point...

Even so, I think it's pretty messed up that the city would declare the area "blighted" because it ignored the area for decades. That's like declaring your girlfriend "mentally scarred" because you beat her.

Sure, something nicer. Actually, something better.

Some manufacturing businesses brewing up green technology - bio-diesel setups, wind turbines, cogen set ups...whatever!

Just not: another "convention center" that mainly generates jobs for waiters and minimum wage store clerks. What's needed - light industry, that provides the good jobs, skilled blue collar jobs that you could raise a family on. Not everyone is the kind of "booksmart" that makes them college material.

In fact, some that are "booksmart college material" are, in the real world, dumb as a bag of hammers.
