"but the companies make far more than necessary"
----by what standard? We only notice when companies make a lot of money, we don't notice when they lose money, except at a time like we are going through now. Companies lose money and go out of business every day. Sometimes profits can seem extreme, but without knowing how much is being poured back into the company (e.g., to expand the business, to conduct research and development, these are the sorts of things that generate benefits not just to the company, but also society in the form of innovation and employment opportunities) it can be misleading to blast companies for making a lot of money. Certainly I would agree that it is insane to pay executives huge amounts of money when their companies are losing money!!! This is were we need to concentrate our outrage--not that a company can make big profit, but how it compensates its managment when the company is not performing well. As too how much profit is too much, we should ask if there is gouging going on, which in itself is not as easy a question to answer as you might think. Price gouging - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"We need to ensure that the firemen, policemen, teachers, social workers, MTA workers, crossing guards, and even the bus boys can live in the city they serve...I hope that one day housing is considered a right as well as health care and things in that realm."
---Very good point in the first part, but you may have lost me in the second part. The unionized workers you mention make good money. But what about the people who work in jobs like bus boy that don't pay very well? I just think that there has to be better solutions than the current arrangment. Housing projects generally are no way to live. I don't think they were designed to be permanent housing solutions, but merely a temporary place to live until you got on your feet; however, they have become the homes for families over generations. Rent stabilization works for some, but its negative consequences, and the fact that it has has been abused, causes some of the negative comments you see here. As to housing being a right, that sounds nice, but once something is enshrined as a right, do we understand the consequences? Is housing a right even for those who refuse to work? And what quality of housing is one entitiled too? Do we want a situation were a deadbeat alcoholic is entitled to live, for free, in an apartment that is nicer than that bus boy who is working so hard?

In short, Joe Bama, I think your heart is in the right place. But I also think that the world is just a little more complicated...

And if that is true, you can live in the pj for free or almost free, also you can get medicaid, and get free food coupons. Not to mention, free heat, free electricity.
You are living better then most people do. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?

Of course is a noble cause.
The problem is that everybody else has to pay for his noble cause except him(and other in the same situation).

For your information getting into the projects ain't that easy. You have to wait years. My friend was on the list for 15 years, he just got it. Its very hard for single people to get an apt. in the projects. My friend had to live in a homeless shelter with his wife and 3 kids just to get an apt. in the projects in the Bronx.
I don't qualify for medicaid, the cut off is about $11,000 a year, nor do I qualify for food stamps, and I'll have to look into the free heat and electricity since I owe Con Edison about $300.

Joe, I agree, there are some people in the middle that are hurting and hopefully things will get better

Just curious will you tell us a little about your background, where you work, went to school if you went?

I ask b/c i think if my tax dollars are going to help goverment programs, i would like to help more people like you, who are out there trying, verses helping lazy people who are not out there trying to make it.
