NY can be a hard place to live with long term, particularly if you don't or haven't yet reached a certain level of affluence to get you above some the tougher stuff. The crappy apartments with no amenities, the crazy or obnoxious roommates, stuff like that.

I used to hate tourists too, but there's not much we can do about them. Here in Manhattan I think transplants outnumber natives and immigrants combined, but we're still not that small of a minority. Manhattan really isn't that much different from the outer boros and New Yorkers here act the same as New Yorkers there. The "I'm better than you" attitude comes from out of state.

The tourists are annoying to locals, but they're easily avoided. It's not like locals don't know where they'll find them and act accordingly. I'd actually enjoy talking to visitors if I was out on the town whooping it up. If you're a "let's go hit up some nightlife" type tourist, (as I am when I visit anywhere fun), you're okay with me and ill go out of my way to do my part and make you feel welcome. Visitors are usually in a great mood and eager to talk with locals too.

All I'm saying is that in NYC is not quality of live, unless you are jewish and got lots of money you are just another souls running in the dirty train system. I hate when people complaint about California , Florida traffic here is horrible if we want go out of city it will take you a good hour to go to a good park. The New York mentality is this one I will buy a 800 $ pair of shoes and come back to my trashy apt full of rodent with my 4 roommates !!! Another thing I hate is that people talk about seasons !!! Which one ? Is only to 10 month of frozen cold then in the remainder goes like this one month of autumn one month of spring barely!! Then one month of 95-100 degree. People here have to hibernate for those 10 month of cold and this is why people here are depress and got attitude all the time !! I know every city have good things and bad the good things are that people aren't that judgmental you can be whoever you want .

My goal is to leave in 9 years when I retire. We plan to move to a less oppressive state to raise our children who will still be relatively young when the time comes. I own a home, am plenty comfortable and could stay here for the rest of my life, but like many other middle class people nowadays, the whole "NYC" vibe just isn't worth the nonsense that comes along with it.

I thought that is what I wanted but I've house-hunted in every county surrounding NYC and have realized that I like NYC the best. If I ever leave NYC it's going to be for another state that isn't in the NYC metro area.
