I can't argue with you, Rachael. Or rather, as a native-born Brooklynite, I can. But it's not necessary.

A New Yorker knows how to get things accomplished, be it a mundane task or something more challenging, and sometimes at light speed.

Real New Yorkers are amongst my favorite characters. I find them all consistently hilarious, pretty much any quip, adage or colloquial remark that only red blooded New Yorkers would say cracks me up, eg. "dis, dat, de oda, fahgettaboutit, yaundastandme?, bustin my chops, not for nothin, a oh, oh a, etc". They are so full of honesty it cracks me up. I once told my boss I saw Sarah Jessica Parker on 5th ave, instead of being happy she replied "She's sucha DAWWWWWWG face" in a heavy Bronx accent, I was busting a gut in laughter.

Oh no...I must be an alien...I think my blood is red. I am a native and I don't have an accent at all, certainly not a "typical" New York accent. LOL

Not to go off topic, but I find it hard to believe any professor would pass up a teaching position at Stanford in lieu of Queens College LOL.

What comes to mind is Tina Turner saying to her audience during the intro of Proud Mary, "We never, ever do nothing nice and easy."

Not everyone here fits this description, but this is the general vibe, imo.

For those of us who are into astrology (not horoscopes...please), New York City's sun is in Capricorn (ambitiousness, success, drive) and her moon is in Aries (fiery intensity, catalyzing energy, optimism, but at times lacking in or learning the challenging lesson of follow-through with projects and relationships). My two cents here in a nutshell. Take what you can use, yadda yadda.

to me, a new yorker is the dichotomy of being extremely, humbly ambitious by paying attention to detail, then have the ability to let loose without giving a crap about anything the next second..then repeat

When a New Yorker has to get something done, it has to be done yesterday.

Why would you refer to "Southern Californian" ppl as "ostentateousness" ...????

That's a media generalization for parts of LA and Orange County, but is certainly not indicative of any of my experiences in some of the nicer areas of SoCal. practically all of San Diego, Rancho Santa Fe, San Juan Capistrano, parts of Irvine, Yorba Linda, parts of the PV Peninsula, etc. are all indicative of the opposite characteristic. And, there are desert and mountain communities, too, that are not pretentious at all, even if they are filled with wealthy second home owners. Some people may be a little ostentatious, but certainly not all. Then, there are some superficial cities, but I agree that it's an unfair generalization to lump everything south of Santa Barbara as the land of plastic people and shallow values.

It's the same as people who generalize all New Yorkers to be rude and impatient, when that's actually a very small population who are that nasty. Just as the nasty New Yorker is not a proper characterization of all the people who live in NYC, the vapid beach bum/skate rat of SoCal is not indicative of everyone who lives there.
