She should bring only what's needed for the evening. Leave the rest in the hotel, preferably in the room safe. And why does she need SO much cash? Generally it's pretty safe in NY. Unless she decides to flash the cash around! And, as in any large city, she should keep her handbag with her at all times.

Default Why do people

express concern about carrying a lot of cash and get robbed of thousands of dollars(always reading in the papers) when they can just keep it in the bank and withdraw bit by bit from an ATM or use a debit card? The fees may be high but it's peace of mind at least.

And, it's not a bad idea to also carry a hidden emergency cash reserve for transportation fees, should she lose her purse. Plus, she should not carry extraneous items with her, just cash, ID, phone, perhaps a single credit card that is easily reported lost should that happen, as in hard copy of the customer service number, card number, etc. written down in the room safe.

She could carry cash, a driver's license and a cc/dc/atm card in a single pocket ...and leave the whole purse at home. She might find it liberating not to lug a purse around.

Safest way is don't carry that much cash. Use plastic. Preferably a credit card over debit. Debit cards don't offer as many protections as credit card.

Now I don't love credit cards. I hate how we are slowly becoming more and more plastic dependent in this society. For instance I'm not big on opening tabs. I've had a few unpleasant experiences with that. There always seems to be some convenient billing mistake that benefits the club/bar.

If you prefer to carry cash, only carry as much as you need, and keep it in a spot that won't be out of your sight ever. For women this is a bit trickier though. A small handbag that never leaves her grip should do the trick though.
