Chicago girls coming to New York City, suggestions for places to stay, fun things to do, Paramount Hotel, Hudson Hotel, Roosevelt Hotel, Big Onion Walking Tours, Tenement Museum
I'm in the planning stages of a trip to NYC with some friends and I'm looking for suggestions for places to stay and cool things to do. There will be 3 of us, late 20s, and only one of us has been before but we all travel quite a bit. We get a (little) annoyed by the regular tourists things (like staring up in awe at the tall building, walking in groups blocking the sidewalks, etc) in our own city, so we won't be doing any of that in yours! Personally I'm always interested in exploring things off the beaten path in Chicago so i'd love to do the same in NYC. I've already pinpointed Time Out NY as a good place to look for restaurants and whatnot but I wanted some extra suggestions as well. Thanks!
Now is the best time to come to New York as far as hotel deals are concerned. Check out QuikBook (Quikbook Hotels: Discount Hotel Reservations - New York and Other Cities). They have amazing deals in some better quality places (like $157 at the Algonquin or even $57 at The Pod Hotel). Best of all, you can make a reservation without prepaying. It's my favorite hotel Web site.
I would avoid the "traditionally affordable" hotels like the Milford or the Pennsylvania. They're comparatively cheap when room prices are high, but they're a bit run down. You can get much better quality for the same price elsewhere right now.
Stay away from the Milford, that place is starting to fall apart.
The Hudson is actually pretty nice. Might be perfect for your age group cause there is a nice bar/club/lounge inside and has a nice atmosphere. Good location too by Columbus Circle, but the rooms are small. Imagine a room that is about 2sq ft larger than a queen size bed and that's the average room size A friend of mine got a good deal there when he visited through Priceline for about $160/night.
what kind of things do you and your friends usually enjoy doing! I would also avoid staying in midtown, because you will walk out of your hotel and be overwhelmed with the things you are tryng to avoid, and probably get sucked in like most! When you are coming also has alot to do with what you can do, for instancewinter festival in central park , or if your coming in march you can visit the flower show at jacob javits center the point is find out whats going on around town when you come!

I booked a meeting there, I had only heard about the cool bar there, and the rooms are CRAZY tiny! I mean, small even by NY standards, so be prepared.
Museum of the City of NY: Museum of the City of New York (5th Ave at 103 St.)
This is always one of the first places I tell all my out of town friends to go. It is not as well-know as the Met or the Guggenheim, but it gives you a real feel for the fabric our fair city and the history which has moved through it so quickly. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum usually has 3 or 4 exhibitions on, covering many areas of art, culture, social history and architecture.
The Frick Collection The Frick Collection: Home Page (1 E. 70th St. at 5th Ave)
Part of Museum Mile. Small, jewel-like collection housed in one of the last remaining Gilded Age houses in NY. Not too crowded, nice garden.
Merchants House Merchant's House Museum 29 E 4th St (between Lafayette St and Bowery, NoHo) . Quite a short visit, in an interesting nabe. Walk through the door and you go back in time a couple of centuries. This is another unknown gem.
