I was thinking about moving back at the end of the month from LA, but friends that I've spoke to say it's a literal "dead zone", even in the temp market.

It's funny, I have one friend that considers NYC the "be all/end all" of cities and she works for a state agency. She tells me that they're calling off the list and hiring hasn't affected them. To hear her tell it, jobs are plentiful.

Here in California, the governor passed a law that ALL state agencies (except prisons and emergency responders) MUST take 1st and 3rd off of every month beginning in February. This is in addition to 10% of employees each agency MUST layoff by the end of this month. The city of la also plans on laying off a bunch workers as well.

The Writer's Strike set this city back MILLIONS of dollars and businesses still haven't recovered fully. Many businesses suffered.

I don't know, but I don't think I'll be moving like I thought. I'll work two part-time jobs if I have to and do the roommate thing, but I don't feel like flying cross-country to lay on someone's couch (family or friend) and not have any funds coming in is a good idea.

Please tell me that it's not as bad as it seems. Please?

Sorry, but it's not good at the moment here. Save your money - stay where you are.

+1. It's bad and I suspect it will get worse. Unless you work in say, healthcare, it's very hard to find a job. I would only move if I had a job lined up already.

Things are getting worse but I guess it depends what you do. Computer programming/IT, health care, and pharma (mostly NJ) is doing well right now.

Pharma is laying off people right and left. Merck, Pfizer and many of the smaller companies are downsizing. Roche isn't, but it's about the only one.

if this recession gets worse and turns to depression, IT will be hit also

but if you are well connected, you should not have problems finding a job

Thanks all of you. I've been learning to follow my "intuition" lately. Every time I think about moving back to NYC, I get this tense feeling inside, which usually means it's a bad idea.

I've been in LA for five years, but I could survive with at least two part-time jobs and a cheaper apartment. It'll work. I'll make due.

Outside of a few industries that are recession proof, the job market in NYC at the moment is bad.

The job market is bad EVERYWHERE so lets put things in perspective. Please tell me what are of the country has a job market that is doing well? Yes the market is bad here, but you have a better chance of getting ANY job here than somewhere else. It may not be the perfect position, or at the salary/location you want, but NYC ALWAYS has opportunities for work...believe it.

My son works in a widely known international financial firm and they are laying people off.
