A friend of mine from upstate is looking into apt in Inwood for school.
I have never taken A or 1 line up to Inwood and back at late night. I had taken them during the evenings though. I can get off at either 207th or Dyckman stations for both lines and get to my destination. I remember that the Dyckman Street station for 1 line looked a little shady. There was PJ (a half dozen mid-rises) across the street. (At least it looked like PJ).
Any recommendation for which line and which stations are the safest for a non-hispanic male? Or maybe which streets to avoid at nights?
The unit he's looking into is on Post Avenue.

If you're moving to Post Avenue, you're much closer to the (1) at either 207th or Dyckman Sts. Even if you live near the (A) at Broadway, the (1) is much more reliable and efficient.

The A is good in the mornings though. It gets spotty later on though.

Even if the A was good during the morning, the 1 always outperforms it. I notice that the A runs slow between 207th St and 125th St.

You might very well be right. I do notice it seems slow going up after 125. I used to take it going down from 145, and it flew. It was very convenient for me at the time.

Now you know. For travel from Inwood, the (1) is king.

I think the 1 is better for you! The A has this smelly homeless guy late sometimes, but he's harmless!

Plastic Bag Man !!!

Post Avenue is much closer to the #1 than to the A, I believe, so taking the #1 means your friend will have a shorter walk home from the subway.

Dyckman is a drug heavy strip. I would avoid it at night, especially on weekends, it gets to rowdy. Let me tell you that the Inwood area around 207th, Post, Dyckman, 10th ave, Academy, Sherman, is the worst section of Inwood. Alot of the crap from University Heights crossed over the bridge into Inwood, and I myself find no difference between that section of Inwood, and where I live in the Bronx.

The A train is better.

Not only is the (1) better for you, but the area has plenty of places to eat if you're in a rush to head downtown. You have your Dominican restaurants that serve you hearty and heavy food for a reliable price and you have your bodegas that make you sandwiches.
