I may possibly be moving to Brooklyn in June to attend Brooklyn College, and I'm wondering if Brooklyn is really as bad as it's made out to be. I understand that every city has its good and bad areas, so I guess what I'm asking is, in general, how would you rate Brooklyn's safety? What area is good, which is bad, how safe is public transportation, etc.?

Brooklyn has some of the best neighborhoods in the city ( as well as some of the worst). I will leave it to the Brooklynites to give you the details on what is good or not but generally don't worry at all.Brooklyn is quite safe in most areas(as is the vast majority of NYC) and the subways are too.. except maybe a few areas of some lines late at night.

This business of Brooklyn having a bad rep has to stop! It isn't any worse than anyplace else, and it's a darn sight better than most.
OK, OK, I was born in this borough. So accuse me of bias! But that's my stand and I'm sticking to it.

You might as well ask if America is safe. That's how varied Brooklyn is. The area around Brooklyn College itself is somewhere in the middle of the pack... not the greatest neighborhood but far from the worst.

That's fine by me, haha! The only reason I ask is because I hear such varied reviews of Brooklyn. Thanks for your input.

I'm from here. Where are you going to live in Brooklyn? That would help alot and I could give you an HONEST opinion.
The area around the college is so-so. The daytime is not so bad because of heavy traffic (alot of people) nightime is what I mean by so-so around the college because its by Flatbush Junction (us Brooklynites just call it The Junction) and that area is shady (but mainly at night because it's busy in the daytime) Basically do like you would do anywhere else. Use common sense and don't wonder off. Take yourself to school (or wherever you need to be), then go home. No need to be wondering around right?
In general, Brooklyn has alot of nice neighborhoods, and ALOT of Mod cut: languageneighborhoods. Depends where you are. Hope your in a nice neighborhood lol.

Well I planned on trying to live close to the school to make it easier on myself, but I guess it's not really a necessity. When you say "so-so" what does that really mean? My definition of "so-so" would be a place, like you said, which is fine during the day while it night it can be shady because of people or groups that just like to mess with people, or cause them trouble (i.e. giving them a hard time for walking on their street, hollering at girls, asking if you want drugs, being rowdy, etc), however not every time you step out the door at night does this happen. Does that sound about right or am I way off?

Basically. They like to rob people at night around the Junction (the back blocks). Travel with friends at night (if you can) and stay on main streets and dont wonder off and dont walk around like you dont belong there. The same thing you would do anywhere else.
