I agree that there are not a lot of pickings in this area, and the references to Quiznos, Blimpies, etc. -- and even the Jewish delies -- simply do not qualify. There are still some good Jewish delis that make a good sandwich, but that is a different animal.
Where I came from, the great heros were all from Italian delis, on fresh baked Italian bread. It was 1/2 loaf per hero, with about two inches of meat and cheese, much of it home made. These have largely disappeared from Manhattan at least -- Todaros (2nd & 30th) is the closest thing I have found.
the best 1 i ever had was believe it or not, in ocean village (beach 59th street in arverne). $3.50 for honey turkey, lettuce and mayo, with a free 20 ounce soda. couldn't beat it with a bat.

I second the corner bodega post. Those places make the best heroes. I live in Miami now and I realize I took those bodegas for granted. They use some meat like paste and cheese on their sandwiches. I actually have to go to the high end supermarket to get a decent sandwich. Publix is the only place that uses Boar's Head and it's like $8-9 for a hero. Damn, I took Boar's Head for granted too.
When I was up in NY for Christmas I got a $3.50 sandwich up in Williamsburg.

Unfourtunately, I dont live close to Far Rockaway. I need good places in Brooklyn. I haven't had a good hero in so long.
Yea I'm glad it's not. I want one from a good "mom and pop" deli.
