I understand what you are saying. However, these tags in my neighborhood are not gang related. Its just some stupid kids that can't even Mod cut: languagedoing these acts out of boredum, peer pressure or ego motivated because they think they're Mod cut: language and want to feel superior by leaving their mark.
What neighboorhood do you live in because i know some heavy gang activity areas in The Bronx.
The point is, that it is the community that is standing up and cleaning up the graffitti...not the city. That is the major difference today and is indicative of a community empowering itself and improving, not decaying. I am glad to see that the community is saying NO and taking action and making a difference. I too have noticed an increase in graffitti, and I also see it being painted over! I am glad the Bronx is stepping up and improving the quality of life for everyone, and being successful too!
You can clearly see by the photo in the article that someone of the 'old' community is upset about this. Surprisingly not the Gentrifiers as some of you might think.
I know this is not about the Bronx, but I am sure similar problems happens there...
Brooklyn's losing battles in the war vs. graffiti taggers
mekitor thanks for the great post...it is happening across the city for sure, however I was just pointing out that the Bronx was having success due specifically to the strong community involvment, and the subsequent enlisting of local businesses, grass roots organizations, and politicians...it takes that many groups together to be successful in the fight. Hopefully Brooklyn can follow the Bronx's example and fight back!
