If memory serves, it's at 11th Avenue, which is decent today. It's not the same as 5th Avenue in the East 60s, but it's not a location that would place you in immediate peril. The location can be can be a little desolate at very late hours on the side streets, so if you're coming back at 2 or 3 in the morning, you might want to take a cab.
It's a Kimpton property if I am remembering correctly, and they're not a chain that locates in the middle of a high crime area. The chain has another nearby, a little to the east in the Theatre District, known as The Muse. Kimpton Hotels are generally pretty nice, for a smaller chain, so I think you'd like it. I have never had an issue that they didn't correct in other cities, though have not used them in NYC.
Just take adequate precautions when you travel about the neighborhood in the off hours and you should be just fine. Enjoy your trip.
