It means OMG this is becoming tiresome in Yiddish. And the whole phrase is "oy vayz mir" but that's a phonetic spelling.
Yiddish has a treasure trove of wonderful expressions. I love shmatte, which means "this old rag" which is what you say when someone complements you on your most wonderful outfit. And there's Mod cut: language, for jerk, and schlep for a long, arduous journey (usually of 10 minutes to the grocery store).

Thank you all for the Yiddish lesson. Would love to learn more. Had a friend in Palm Springs that made a sign for his business that was a take off of the many signs allready in the area, "Si Habla Yiddish". Normally in the Southern California area and in many Southwestern States you will see a sign that reads that the owers speak Spanish.
I like a lot of German phrases, too. Weltshmerz, (spelling?) which means "world weariness." And the classic "schadenfruede" (spelling?) which means "relishing the unhappiness/bad luck of others."
I went to college in the city with a girl that came here from Africa. It was cute when she would say typical NY'er things like "I hate schlepping my portfolio on the subway from Brooklyn!" in her accent.

After reading your post I sent that to someone I know who's been lying about living in NYC and she sent it back saying a bunch of asterisks means nothing to her.
Now I'm so embarrassed as I thought a bunch of asterisks meant "jerk." Oh well, I'll start to say I'm from another city/post there also, to save CD posters here the fate of knowing me.
Thanks guys - I had no idea that it was yiddish - see you have just added to my knowledge of the day :-) - hey at least we all pretty much knew what it meant.
Oh the asterisks were put in there by city-data--I was trying to spell Mod cut: language but it doesn't technically mean jerk, it really is a rude name for a major part of male anatomy. Sorry!
My dad unearthed a fantastic compendium of Yiddish phrases on the web a few years back. We were reading them and howling. Something like Mod cut: language meaning "old man" tickles my funny bone. All these phrases can easily be used in South Florida, too, from Boca to Miami.

I noticed a ton of Hipsters who reside in either Midtown or Lower East Side Manhattan or from Williamsburg Brooklyn or even near Red Hook who say they are FROM NYC but are really from the midwest like Ohio and whatnot.
What bothers me is that they think they are so hip and know all about NYC but only been in Manhattan and a few select parts of Broooklyn and probably never touched the other boroughs. Annoying.
Most people would love to say they are from NYC. My relatives used to say, 'everything West of the GWB is the sticks'
Yes, but many people from NYC leave of their own volition... Some even go to NJ!!!
