Is it really that great being able to walk everywhere on days like today...it's freezing..

On nice days in the spring or fall...sure, absolutely..

When it's really hot or cold...walking is a major inconvenience.

As a guy looking towards moving to NYC, been in NYC in Jan, and having spent many a winter in Chicago... NYC isn't that cold!

Although like many others, I see the only con is the price...

For me...the space, not an issue... I am an anti pack rat... As long as I had a decent kitchen and a decent place to sleep and have sex... that is all I need. I would prefer spending time out in cafes, libraries, museums, plays, meeting foreign people, etc. Basically living this life to its fullets.

Sometimes you have to get out to the country too though... so, just get out! Plenty of outdoors in NY state. Personally when I get there it will probably be trips to Cali and FL as I have family in both and houses to stay in both. I can't handle more than a week or so of it though, I go bored out of my mind!

Default 2 cents

pros:
public transit
walkable
cultural venues
entertainment
restaurants
flights (many choices for direct flights from LGA/JFK, and better pricing than smaller markets)

cons:
noise
state and city taxes
tourists
cost of living

privacy
(There's something to be said for a standalone house with ample space between you and your neighbors.)

any given garbage day in warm weather
(We pile it on the sidewalks ....and let it melt. The smell rivals the slums of any major city in a developing country. In Chicago the trash is placed in dumpsters, which are located in alleys, that can be easily avoided.)

rats
(incidentally, HUGE fans of garbage day)

Again, most of these are just pros/cons of city living. Since Manhattan is one of the most population dense locations in the US; the rewards and pitfalls of city living tend to be magnified. This is simply my opinion; it's all quite subjective.
