I think I read the same article. The example they used was a 5-apartment building in bushwick that the owner converted into a 12-unit building. The couple they interviewed rented out a room, which was about 23' x 12' (I think), with no kitchen, but they did have their own bathroom And if I remember correctly, they were paying $650 a month.
I guess for $750, I don't expect much above the example provided.
That must be a dream come true for FDNY going into a place laid out like that all smoky and burning! God bless firefighters.
750 is what im paying for a decent place with free heat/gas/parking atleast twice the size of a manhattan shoebox, but its newark, nj. There are ones as low as 600 but those are in the bad part of town.
I don't think it'll be hard finding that price in Bronx.
There are affordable housing co-ops; their rent goes according to your income.
They have rental units as well; but those are more "project" like. The co-ops are more clean and the tenants are working class decent people (for the most part).
You have to buy the apts of course, but their price is not expensive.

from renting in a co op bldg in central riverdale 4 years ago i was paying $795. i moved into the bldg across the street and paid $20 less per month. now I'm paying $849.55 per month but I should point out that these low rates are for a studio. both bldgs and apartments are very clean, the area is low crime, and there is free street parking so it's a relatively good deal (but of course it's for a studio)

Not many. I live in the upper Ditmars section of Astoria--a semi-basement 1 bedroom for $750. It's in a 3 family house. I get heat and hot water included in it. I'm moving out probably around April, May if you're interested. My landlord is probably going to have his realtor put it up in her listings. That's how I found it.
My nephew has an apartment for about 750 in Bed-Stuy. It is what is called a kitchenette with a shared bathroom. Pretty decent size for one person and it has a small separate bedroom with gas and electric included.
