Which is why they almost certainly won't do it. It's a visual deterrent. Makes me uncomfortable as well, which I said, but that's because I think it's a culturally troubling thing, not because there's any risk of actually getting mowed down by an NYPD machine gun.
I personally dont like it because for example when im walking and theres a cop with weapons they sometimes give me dirty looks like there about to kill me and even if they didnt we all no how carless a good part of the nypd is we all know how many innocent people they killed. Bottom line i don't know what person would be comfartable with a cop staring at them with a gun in hand looking like he is ready to kill an innocent person.
wow surprising to read the posts. unless there are a bunch of felons posting, it would seem NYC has a police problem not a crime problem.
i guess NYC changed since i last visited.
Don't pay attention to them. It's standard operating procedure for people around here to criticize the police. The truth is, this city couldn't function without them.
You just hate the cops. Every post in this thread you have made about them has been negative. The nypd made this city livable again. God bless them all. They could have a guy with a 50 cal on every corner and it would not bother me one bit.

No one is saying we do not need cops, or that I hate them. They are an essential part of society. Just something tells me not even 10 years ago would we have accepted seeing POLICE men and women carrying Submachine guns.
They are in place so you accept them, and they are damn sure doing a good job in doing that aren't they? Imagine seeing on of those children’s book when you where a kid. Instead of seeing the nice drawing of a police officer, looking as if he could help, there was one of those discussed in this thread. Nice children’s book huh?

Im amazed that people think they are just there to help you. I think they can help greatly in a mumbai style attck, but most likely we will see them in crowd control and bank run scenarios.
They have officers with a bomb dog doing random bag screenings at the SI ferry terminal, along with three machine pistol wielding, very military looking fellas. Not sure if they were NYPD but they sure looked serious.
