Was wondering if anyone could give me an inside scoop on their experience as a social worker for the board of ed. What they like/dislike about it. And is as competitive as they say it is? On the site it says that they get more applicants than positions available for bilingual candidates.

Also, I checked out the requirements on the highered website but was kinda confusing. If I have an undergrad degree in social work and haven't begun classes for my masters yet can I still work? I am still in college and trying to decide between teaching history for middle school or doing social work but really don't know... Thanks in advance.

I am not sure but I doubt it...especially with the economy. It is extremely competetive.I am a teacher now but I started as a social worker for the Board of Ed 30 years ago and I had my MSW from Columbia before I even started.

Don't give up though. Go and talk to someone if you think the requirements are confusing.Keep plugging along. It is a very rewarding career.
So is teaching..... especially in NY !!!!

edited after the fact to admit: Once a social worker always a social worker and you can't really teach in NY without being a social worker. So I guess I am in fact " a social worker working for the board of ed" .. just not officially anymore .

I've heard those jobs are harder to come by than teaching jobs. I teach in the public schools of the city, so this is what I've heard.

I've heard they pay pretty well.

(So I guess it would follow that it'd be extremely competitive, given that most social worker salaries are astonishingly low...)
