Not knowing the costs in Brisbane, I'm at a loss to specifically address your question. HOWEVER, I can say, with confidence, that it costs more to live in NYC than almost any other city in the world (a few excepted).

Take a look at the 'Need info on moving to NYC' sticky at the top of this board. Many of your questions will be answered there.

I have friends in Australia, Melbourne and Sydney, and they find New York to be much more expensive. As a rough calculation, the general US is going to be about 17% higher than Brisbane's cost of living, with New York being about 65% higher than the general US. New York is higher in a few main categories, housing being paramount among them. $1.17 (US) = $1 (AUS) and in NYC $1.92 (US) = $1 (AUS) in terms of maintaining the standard of living. $100k (AUS) would require $192k (US), for example.

It is viable for a professional couple, however, especially since salaries are generally higher in NYC. It depends upon the field as well, since some have premium salaries in NYC. And, if you're working as ex-pats, many companies will assist or pay for housing if it was at their request that you relocated.

It might even be more expensive, given the current exchange rate for the Australian dollar.

Hi lhofman, would be glad to help if you could provide some biographic data pertaining to your occupation, desired housing, your own required standard of living, etc. From up yonder, it's hard to speculate about down under without knowing your stats there.

On the whole it is much more expensive cost of living wise. However, as a professional couple you are likely to earn more. Some of the incidentals are cheaper such as public transportation, cable and the paper but on the whole the essentials are much more expensive than Brisbane (even the inner city areas). For instance, think about rent costing you 2 to 3 times as much and the same for groceries and electricity too. Even though a car itself is cheap the costs of running it in Manhattan are exhorbitant. So on the whole unless your looking at getting 2-3 times as much in pay your cost of living is comparatively going to be more in Manhattan than in Brisbane.

I know this is an old thread, but NY prices are similar to Sydney. I don't know how things are in Brisbaine, but I'm sure you can compare
