Does anyone know how dangerous or safe the nearby neighborhood is?

I'm not sure yet but there's a likelihood my employer will temporarily require me to work in this area. Tentatively, they're planning on having me start my shift there at ~ 7-9 am and end around 6 pm. ( gets dark at night well before 6 during the winters ) I don't have a car and am planning on transportation via subway. I also generally eat outside, so I expect to be outside during lunch hours.

I just needed to ask about the safety of this area because I've been to The Bronx before ( in other regions ) and many places appear shady. I don't think I'm overreacting if I say it's not unimaginable to get randomly punched in the face or shot by someone in this borough. Now with the economy in shambles and the city's intent of stagnating the police force, I'm not optimistic.

Much feedback would be appreciated.

Default well

that's the west Bronx, Morris Heights, a shady area to be truthful, but it's still better now than it was 20-30 years ago

I won't lie, the area is not a good one, but i think being randomly punched or shot is likely a thing of the past now. those hours you mention seem OK, and as you can see from many posters here on older posts, many will say you will probably be OK. just don't walk down desolate sidestreets when it's dark outside

i might be concerned about you in the dark if you are walking to the 4 train which is jerome Avenue and i guess somewhere around Mt Eden Avenue. the area is hilly and it's hard to know what your route to the train would be

shakespeare avenue is the hood, no doubt about it....but if you have street smarts you'll be completely fine...honestly the area looks a lot more intimidating than it really is.
