Hi everybody,

I just arrived in NY from Belgium and I am trying to find appartments. One of them is in the 162th/Broadway in Washington Heights and the other in the 129th/St Nicholas terrace. How are these places? Are they safe? I must precise that I am with my wife.
Thanks

NODO

What is your budget? How long are you staying? I can't honestly recommend those areas.

I will stay for 2 years and I have a maximum budget of 1400USD per month. What's wrong with those places?

if you had to choose i would go for 162nd and broadway...its easier to access public transportation and its a heavier traveled pedestrian area. 129 and st nicholas terrace is kind of isolated because there's a park with a huge cliff next to it so you're kinda cut off from traveling east. i walked around there 1nce in the daytime and i saw an abandoned building over there too. not to mention there's some sort of school over there (a high school maybe?) and i'm not fond of living close to schools.

Are you working in the area? I only ask because there are much nicer/safer places to live.

I am working in presbytarian hospital so clearly, the 162th is really near my work. And I don,t see anything else in my prices in Manhattan.
During the day, the place does not seems very dangerous, but I never went there late at night. Does Broadway still lively in this area during the night?

All of Washington Heights is live. Broadway is one of the main strips so its going to be even more live. West of Broadway is more quiet.

Talk to the people at Presbyterian about housing. There is Columbia housing right on Haven Avenue not two blocks from the hospital and they'll have Security walk you home at night if necessary.

I would also recommend looking NORTH of 168th Street along Fort Washington Avenue, which is MUCH better than the areas in which you're currently looking. I went to medical school there and lived in the area for four years.

Sorry to tell you but neither one of those places is very safe nor quiet. Everyone hangs out in the lobby or out on the stoops, they open the hydrants in the summer and sell drugs and smoke marijuana right in front of the building.

162th and Broadway is a heavily congested area traffic and people wise. The Noise in the summer will be a MAJOR issue for the residents living on the broadway strip during the Day & Night, even if you live in a top floors apt, I wouldn't recommend it. The only advantage of the area will be the transportation and the fact that you wont get mugged.

Like someone mentioned on this thread, Try west of Broadway.
