New Cuts Could Doom Late-Night Subway Service, M.T.A. Director Says
The executive director of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said on Wednesday that a possible second round of service cuts and fare increases in the near future would take the transit system “beyond doomsday” and that extreme measures like stopping late-night subway service could not be ruled out. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/30/ny...30mta.html?hpw
Scary stuff.

The increase in fare is one thing.. but no more late-night service? I hope this speculation ends, and just leaves the system the way it is now. I'm definitely not the only one who would be unhappy here because no matter what time I come home, whether that be 10pm or 3am, the 7 train is PACKED. Ending late night service would probably be a stupid idea for the MTA as I'm sure they make a lot of money off it as well.. probably more than they lose, but that's just a guess.
I think this is political posturing to force Albany to make a decision on a bail out. New York is a 24 hour city and it would be ridiculous to stop late night service as it will affect the city in detrimental ways and the MTA knows that.
I don't know what is happening with the MTA but someone needs to seriously look at their books and find out where the mismanagement of finances is coming from.
A LOT of the MTA's woes stem from poor investments that have tanked in the past 18 months. While they're other mismanagement is unquestioned, it's not certain they'd taken into account this other source of monetary loss.
If the alternative is ending late night subway service, it seems to me that maybe an alliance of Manhattan bars and nightclubs could agree to some sort of tax to fund the MTA. How about a $1-a-drink city tax after midnight that would directly fund subway service? Manhattan nightlife spots stand to lose more than that if people can't take the subway home to the boroughs.
It is about time they keep up with rest of the world. NYC is a 24 hour city? What about Hong Kong, Tokyo, Paris, London . . . none has a 24/7 subway system and their subway makes ours look downright third world. They have just as much night life as we do.
A 4 hour break in service a day will actually allow MTA to keep up with cleaning/repair of the subway, so there is less issues during rush hour when it MATTERS. It is a great, great change. I don't mind them increasing fare to $3 each way if they can get rid of the filthy homeless smells in subways and make it look anywhere near a world class city's subway. No one is looking for luxury here, but is it too much to ask for clean stations/cars?
Simply force a flat rate on cabs from Manhattan to any of the five boroughs (plus tolls), similar to going from JFK to Manhattan, and we are all set. People who think NYC subway is acceptable has never used subways in other world class cities.
