Does Riverdale have the overcrowding problem that other NYC school districts have? specifically the pre-K/K classes? Our son is only 1.5, but I'm already worried that by the time he's ready for school it may get even worse. we are looking at thhis area, and wonderign if there is goign ot be the same problem. Do we need to jsut move to the suburbs when the time comes?

What makes you think that the schools won't be a problem, 3.5 years from now?

Riverdale, like the rest of the Bronx, is a dangerous area, school-wise, unless you spend lots of money for a private school.

Your best bet is a move to Westchester County or Suffolk County for public schools.

Check out InsideSchools.org for reviews and information on Riverdale schools. Specifically P.S. 24 Spuyten Duyvil School and P.S. 81 Robert J. Christen School.

Best of luck to you!

Perhaps, but you need to look at individual schools, not the district as a whole. You could also call the schools directly to find out how many students are currently enrolled, to get an idea of whether they're currently overcrowded or not ...

I read all of your criteria in your other thread. You also have to think long term about middle school and HS. In some sections the elementary schools may be fine, but not the others. Some areas have good schools all the way through.

Sometimes you may have to make sacrifices for your childs sake, such as commutes. Some areas like Riverdale, areas of Queens, or Brooklyn, have schools that offer good park areas for sports, and have good music, and art programs, as well as academics. You should be able to find rentals in your price range.

And what you say (good elementary schools, bad middle/high schools) also applies to the "nice" parts of Mt. Vernon and Yonkers in southern Westchester.

Do not send your kids to any public high school in the Bronx, they are all terrible.

Here is a Riverdale Press article link regarding this exact topic. I have a feeling that it might get worse, based on simple math.
