I recently moved to NY and am searching for an apartment. I recently saw a posting in the paper but the only thing is that nobody can tell me the name of the area!! I know about Williamsburg and Park Slope but this area is I guess a gray area in Brooklyn. The apartment is located on east 49th street between Foster and Faragut. The main street closest to it is called Utica. To get to the apartment I had to take the #4 train all the way to the end (Easter Parkway & Utica). Does anyone know what this area is called?
Eastern Parkway and Utica is generally not the best. I haven't been there in a while and the winds of gentrification may be swept though, but in the past it was a no go. I would stick to the more established areas if I were you. Being new to the city will be enough to deal with. Hope I don't sound too fatherly, but I wouldn't want my daughter (I presume you are female) living in some ghetto just to be in NY.
The area around Eastern Pkwy & Utica is called Crown Heights and unless you are Caribbean, African American or Hasidic Jew chances are you will not feel comfortable in the neighborhood.
The north side of Eastern Parkway is the 77 Pct and the south side is the 71 Pct. Check the crime statistics here: http://nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/pct/cspdf.html (broken link)
FYI, East 49 and Foster is consider a part of Flatbush and is actually in the 67 Pct. It is a complete sh*thole, the worst in the city in my opinion. Don't even bother wasting a phone call.
dont listen to them its not bad you can like out there you just have to be street smart and i mean as far as new york safe it might not be but then again new york has gotten so insanely safe and i think every one can agree on that
That area is very racially seperated. Well it used to be 2 years ago. Not sure how it is now. But its generally not a GREAT area but its not a bad area. However its one of the few places in NYC who's crime rate went up instead of down last year. But i wouldn't worry. But chances are it wont get gentrified because of the huge amounts of Jews and Carribean's that are family oriented and own buisness's in the neighborhood. Which i think is a good thing.
