I agree $800-$1000 is unrealistic. HOWEVER, if you can pay up to $1,500 it might work. Granted, near Manhattan, ok super unrealistic. Fact is, your hubby will likely have to commute. But you can find apts in Queens and some parts of BK for under $1,500. And not necessarily grimy areas. (We live in Gravesend and pay $1200 for a decent size 1 bedroom and we have a toddler). It's about 1.5 hrs into the city for my hubby but we make it work. Or even Inwood in Manhattan. Not the nicest area but it's not the worst.
Now playgroups- if you mean the occasional playgroup, those can be free. Link up to yahoogroups and find moms in your area willing to meet for weekly playdates. If you mean day care, ummmm, yeah- super expensive in NYC. You def need to make way more $3k a month, since some daycares can run as high as a couple thousand a month. The least expensive I have found is about $500-$700 a month, and that was in the Bronx.
I also advise you find an apt that pays heat and hot water. We pay our own and that totals about $100 extra a month.
Good luck!
