Whats faster? Need to get from the Courtyard (3rd Ave) to the Stage Deli (7th ave). Its only four long blocks. Does crosstown traffic make it take longer than walking? Or have they finally cleared up traffic to where it can be done in a few minutes?
Actually, it's closer to a mile, which is more than just four long blocks. (Unfortunately, you can't just count the numbered avenues, you also have to include Lexington, Park, and Madison Avenues ..... )
What time of day do you need to travel? A cab would probably be faster than walking, but if you can catch the E train, it looks to be about a 15 minute trip (probably about the same as walking).
You can check HopStop for more mass transit options, as well as an approximation of the taxi fare.
Depending on the time of day, it could take just as long to walk, take a taxi, or go on the subway. I'd guess that would take about 15-20 minutes to walk, depending on pedestrian traffic and your own speed. If you're at the right time, it could take a few minutes in a taxi.
A fun statistic to keep in mind about driving in midtown Manhattan: are you aware that the average speed of a car there is 1.7 miles per hour? (No, the decimal point isn't placed incorrectly. You can actually walk just as fast as a car moves through midtown.)
Well given the new closings of Bway in midtown traffic will be very congested at least these initial days. I live in midtown on the west side and commute daily to midtown east and have found that the best way to move crosstown is to walk. There are too many regulations on traffic (can't turn here or there this and that) and if you are in any kind of hurry it is not worth the surprise. Just walk if you are able.
During the day, walking takes the same time as a bus (because of the traffic). I walk further every day (from Union Square to Ave. B.). It talks me about 15 minutes, but I'm used to it and walk quickly.
Personally, I would walk. Cabs in Midtown always seem to get stuck behind Con Ed doing construction or some such mess.
