Not trying to burst your bubble but NYC was in DC long before Sotomayor. Theodore Roosevelt, our 26th President, was from NYC. IMHO I don't think we've had a decent President since.

She is a great success story. A Puerto Rican woman raised in the projects in the Bronx by a single mother to be nominated to serve on the supreme court of the US.

Interesting, because my take is she's kind of a "mirror" of Souter (i.e. Souter was moderate with a slight conservative lean, and I think she's moderate with a slight liberal lean).

As for NYC in DC, this even applies to the Supreme Court. I think at the very least Cardozo and current justice Ginsberg were from NYC even professionally (i.e. what court they came from), and I'm sure there were more.

During Obama's presidency we also had the first Hispanic woman to serve as secretary in the U.S. cabinet. (Hilda Solis of Mexican/Nicaraguan descent) From immigrant parents.

There's actually two hispanics in the U.S. Cabinet at the moment. (Both of Mexican descent) Kinda makes me proud too.

Won't be long 'till we get our first Hispanic president. :P

Benjamin Nathan Cardozo was born in New York City on May 24, 1870, and was the first Hispanic, or, if you prefer, Latino, and second Jew, to serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. (Louis Brandeis (1916-1939) was the first Jew to serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.)

According to Portrait Gallery - page 1, Cardoza was an Associate Judge (1914-1927) and Chief Judge (1928-1932) of the New York State Court of Appeals, before becoming an Associate Justice of the United State Supreme Court (1932-1938).

Lol you are so right. Even Colin Powell was in DC. He's from The Bronx. He was the secretary of state before Condoliza Rice. I do not think I wrote her name well, but you know who I am talking about lol.

I'm so proud to be a Latina from the Bronx! This is a story we can all tell our kids, no matter where you come from you can reach your dreams! :-)By the way, Benjamin Cardoso was Portuguese not Hispanic.

It proves once again that political reliability above all else comes first.

Hispania was the name given by the Romans to the whole of the Iberian peninsula, and this includes both Portugal and Spain. Thus, people who trace their heritage to either country are Hispanic.
