Not officially part OF the Zoo, but very close by, is the Carousel. The last time I took a ride, it cost 25¢ -- it's now $2.00, so it's obviously been a while. Still, it's a fun few minutes .....
Bronx Zoo hands down, my granddaughter who lives in NJ and loves Tigers was just there in Feb. her parents got her a behind the scenes ticket, where she could get up close and touch and learn about the care of the animals.
I have pictures of my Dad (born 1924) at the zoo at the statue, my husband (late 30's) at the same statue, myself (1949) my kids (1970) and now my granddaughters (2009).......a family legacy, the Bronx Zoo a part of our family memories.
Bronx Zoo - hands down! Its bigger, better, and less of a city experience. Sure, its a trip out there, but you get to see SO much more. CP zoo doesn't hold a candle to it.
The Bronx Zoo is world class, and the Central park zoo is more of a novelty. Any zoo lover that visits NYC has too visit the Bronx Zoo. It's one of the best IMO, and possible the best.

Bronx Zoo on Wednesday is not exactly free, but it is a pay-what-you-wish admission - However, the shuttle doesn't run on Wednesdays in the summer (in July and August).
