Thanks fo looking, all. I need to get from North Jersey to Long Island, at about 6AM on a Friday morning. My options are

(1) One of the tunnels (holland/lincoln), going through Manhattan onto L.I.E.

(2) Via Staten Island (Gothals, Outerbridge) to Verrezanno to Belt.

Anyone have any idea which route is best, and how bad the traffic is on average? Especially,

(aa) how bad is the traffic getting onto the tunnels and crossing manhattan at around 6AM? Take more than an hour or two?

(bb) How bad is Brooklyn-Bound Staten Island traffic at around 6AM, especially the Verrezzanno? And how about the Belt towards Long Island?

Any specific advice is appreciated, I am a Queens resident, I just never have to make the city-bound trip at rush hour.

My husband travels through the tunnel (Lincoln) at around 6:30 am every morning coming from New Jersey. Granted we live in Jersey City so the tunnel is right there but he never experiences a back up at the actual tunnel at that time. Getting through Manhattan should be fairly easy at that time and the Midtown Tunnel shouldn't be backed up out bound that early in the morning.

Can't help you out with the other route, sorry.

Default where in N jersey?

if you live at or below the tunnels i could understand why you would go those routes but if you lived near the gwb, why not that way? if you lived in northern bergen county near rockland county, you could take the tappan zee bridge

going thru manhattan streets to get to li would totally stress me out. for me the verrazano br route would be best

Depending on where you are going, it can be faster to drive through Manhattan than detour through the Bronx or Staten Island. If I need to go to, say, Newark, or need to take I-78 out towards PA, I take the Lincoln Tunnel. If I need to go off I-80, then I take the GWB. Do it right, and it's a straight shot tunnel to tunnel. (I pretty much avoid the Holland Tunnel; I hate it.)

If you go through the Bronx, I strongly recommend taking the Bruckner rather than the Cross-Bronx.

Now, if you are coming from central/south Jersey, take 440 to the Outerbridge and then the Verrazano. Best if you don't need to go to the North Shore.

My experience with driving in Jersey is that it is almost never faster to go out of your way to avoid Manhattan.
