I wouldn't call it up and coming. Saying that sort of implies that it was something bad before or something was wrong with it. It wasn't. It was a working class ethnic neighborhood, and a lot of native city folk were happy with it that way.
Its sort of up in the air as to what it exactly it is now or what it will be in a few years. Personally I don't think it will remain a hipster/trustafarian haven.
There are also a good deal of newly-arrived European families in the area. I think the gentrification is here to stay--it's far from just trustafarian's there, though they were good customers.
lol, I heard Williamsburg was a hipster haven, but I did not understand the magnitude until the first time I emerged from the Bedford stop. It was almost comical.
If you can stomach the over the top, 24/7, "hipness" williamsburg is not that bad. I imagine the hipsters will set there sights on a new mecca eventually.
The "Hipster Olympics" short video filmed in prime Williamsburg should give you a sense of the area. I thought it was funny the first time I saw it but I can't say I really have any desire to see it again.

I'll second that; there was nothing wrong with Williamsburg before the hipsters began to infest it. Incidentally, you can often spot the hipster (as opposed to the real New Yorker) because they think it's cute to refer to that neighborhood as "Billyburg." You won't hear that from a genuine Brooklynite.

2. Revitalized and much better than past....much better!

Again I have to disagree. I actually lived there in the center of it all ( Bedford an N 1st Street) before,during and after the "revitalization"and it is not better than it was ,at all.
Next time you go there open your eyes wide and look closely.It is now one of the grimiest looking neighborhoods in the city.The streets,sidewalks and empty lots are filthy and filled with trash.There is graffiti everywhere.Not good street art,bad street art which is graffiti. They like it in Williamsburg because they they think it is cool and it is art but it isn't and it is everywhere.My new neighborhood in The Bronx looks much cleaner and less grimy !
When I was getting ready to move out of the neighborhood I had a revelation. I started going through old boxes of photos from my early days in that neighborhood and was startled to see how clean the buildings and streets looked 15 years ago.The difference is amazing.
There is a very ironic thing about Williamsburg. The people living there think they are living in the epitome of a NY neighborhood and congratulate themselves constantly for being there but it might be the most un-New York neighborhood in the whole city.It is like living in sections of Boston or SF but it isn't really very NY at all.
Plus there is a TON of toxic chemicals in the soil thanks to all the factories that were in Williamsburg. It seems every time a developer puts up a new condo they strike oil or get lead or some other toxin that causes cancer when its airborne.
True, I lived in the neighborhood for a month and it always smelled.
