I'm planning a trip to NYC with my friend in August. We are both 18 year old women and need to find out which areas are safe to stay in. We're looking at alot of Hostels (we're poor) and we found one that's female only, which seems safer (and cleaner). But its located in Harlem, and our parents are wary about that.

It's situated at 137 West 111st Street. Right near central park, around the Harlem Meer area.

Is this area safe? We plan on coming home late, so if it's not, we'll be booking at a hostel in a better location.

Also, any tips on hostel living would be appreciated.

What about the Vanderbilt YMCA on East 47th Street? My uncle stayed there several years ago and liked it.

It's not a bad part of Harlem, and I don't think it's close to any of the messier PJs, so it should be okay.

Have you tried looking in parts of waterfront Queens and Brooklyn? Though they're not in Manhattan, the waterfront parts will probably get you to points of interest in Manhattan more quickly. Also, Brooklyn has a goodly amount of things to do.

Yeah nyctc7 is right on, the Chelsea Hostel is excellent, it's one of my favorite places to stay while in the city. The rooms are cheap (28+ dollars a night), and the neighborhood itself is centrally located, so a cab or subway (C,E and the 1) ride to most spots you would want to see shouldn't be too bad. And it's safe. Just make sure that you have your passport, they will give you a hard time without it.

W 111th isn't that bad of an area, however, it isnt the best of locations. I like the suggestion to stay at the chelsea hotel. 23rd st on the west side is perfect, especially if you're going to be out late. Great scene. near meatpacking, and a quick jaunt on the F/V (23rd and 6th) to the lower east side/ east village. Most nightlife is beneath 23rd. Enjoy watching the sunrise. :-)

Here's another hostel:

Big Apple Hostel

Located on 45th St near Times Square/theater district, Rockefeller Center, etc. etc.
I guess I would choose a hostel based on where you plan on hanging out late at night. Keep in mind that your being 18 excludes you from some of the club scene, if that's what you're into.
