It's not necessarily a sign the local economy is doing well. It could just mean with a high concentration of folks trying to keep up appearances. It could also just mean people are doing a little better overall here, but the rest of the country is doing really poorly.

Hmmm. Queens is part of Long Island. Queens County is on the western end of Long Island.
That's the technical truth, but not a soul will ever refer to anything to the west of Great Neck as Long Island. The actual island, it's on, but we have a distinct separation between Suffolk/Nassau county and Queens. We tend to say Queens is a part of NYC, not Long Island, no matter if that's the geographical truth. Anyway, this thread is really old.. I have no idea why it's even up again.
