Our son is moving to attend the New School of Social Research. Our budget is $1200-$1500, we want him as close as possible to the school, he will have to work during the day and attend grad school in the evenings. Is it possible to find an apt over the Internet/phone? Thanks for all the great websites; HopStop, Trips 123, etc
I agree it will be tough with $1200...it might be possible to do it if he lives outside the city or in Queens/Brooklyn and commutes in since rent is cheaper (I'm assuming the school is in Manhattan). I would recommend to use craigslist but thats really only good for people who are familiar with the areas they are looking in.
We have contacted the school about student housing, they have a few small dorms for students only. Since his girlfriend will be coming, that is not an option. Is the commute from Queens/Brooklyn any different than the commute from Jersey City? He will be traveling home after evening classes(approx 10 p.m.)
Thanks for the info, it is helpful.

I keep reading that Queens and Brooklyn are cheaper then Manhattan, but Im not seeing it. The only places I see that are generally cheaper in Queens and Brooklyn are notoriously shady areas (Crown Heights, Bed Stuy, Jamaica). Most of the higher end places in both those buroughs are not very different from average places in Midtown or the Financial District. In fact, some of Brooklyn is at levels youd expect to find in Tribeca.
