We will start looking into those 2 new areas, thank you! I think Jersey City is out of the picture.
Weehawken is a tremendously easy commute. I can speak from experience on that one. If you time the bus well, it takes maybe 10 minutes to get to the Port Authority near Times Square, and you can get right on the A,C or E train there.
However, I saw that you mentioned the 10pm thing. The NJ transit buses stop at 10pm if Im not mistaken. Which means your son would have to find some other way back through the Lincoln tunnel to Weehawken.
Great thing about the NYC Subways is that they are 24 hours. You dont need to worry about bus schedules.
IHowever, not sure if I can take living in NJ, and no offense, but most of North Jersey that Ive seen is run down.
Then you haven't seen much of it. The overwhelming majority is fine.
It would be like someone judging all of New York City based on Morrisania, Bed-Stuy, Hunt's Point, etc. You get my drift. The stereotyping and painting with a broad brush is uncalled for.
I double checked this just for accuracy and you are exactly right. The bus to Weehawken runs until 1:30 am on weekdays and 12:30 am on weekends. Thanks for the correction there. Someone told me it stopped at 10pm and I never tried to ride later then that, just took them at their word.

I wasnt judging North Jersey on anything, I was posting my observation.
Additionally, I have seen or driven through a large swath of Fort Lee, Weehawken, Elizabeth, Jersey City and Hoboken, and maybe I just had the unfortunate experience of going through the crap areas, but I saw run down row of buildings after run down row of buildings, and it didnt change when going over city lines.
In fact, as soon as you get on the New Jersey side of the Lincoln Tunnel, its a run down mess, and it gets no better outside of the swath of board walk in the tourist trap area on the river. However if you go about 5 blocks deep, its more run down crap.
Now, just because its run down, doesnt mean its not safe, or an ok area, Im not speaking towards that end, Im just speaking of the condition of the shops and buildings.
I didnt see anything in Weehawken itself to lead me to believe it wasnt a generally safe area.

So, her son should be good with the bus.
It runs between 1:30am and 5:30am as well but at 2:30, 3:30, and 4:30.
Maybe the 156 or 159? The only one I checked was the 158, since thats the only one I ever rode, but I know the other two have a similiar route.
actually its the 128 schedule you should look at on NJtransit.com...on that schedule it lists times for when the 156 and 158 also leave from much of the same places
the only reason why I know so much about it is I extensively looked into it because I'm planning on renting an apt in weehawken off blvd east...nice decent area...otheriwse I'd know nothing about weehawken lol
