I'm going with my partner to buy some jogging shorts and shoes. We figured it would be a great idea to take advantage of the summer and get our workout routine into gear....plus, $100 spent on running apparel is better than $150 month for a gym membership for both of us. We're going to jog together. So which chain is most competitive? Modells? Sports Authority? etc? Thanks

I think Modells generally is the cheapest. Well that's been my experience at least.

Ok cool. We have one of those right near us. Actually...we have a Sports Authority and a Modells nearby..I know there are other stores..but those were the ones I was thinking would be cheapest.

Thanks

Here's my hidden gem, V.I.M, I always get good deals on boots and running sneakers in there.

LoL, now I know I'm getting old..VIM is a clothing store, comparable to Dr. Jays, Jean Star, etc. There still a couple in the Bx and Harlem, not sure if they exist past mid-town anymore.

Modell's is cheaper than Sports Authority or Dick's. You can also find cheap running clothes at places like Target and Marshall's (not sure of the availability of these chains in NYC). Actually, I just went to the Target website and saw a men's track jacket for $5.74, so maybe consider shopping on the internet too. Also try Kmart (I know there's one in Manhattan).

Are you a new runner? If you're serious about running regularly and building mileage, don't skimp on the shoes. I'm not saying you have to buy the newest, most expensive technical shoe (and running shoes most definitely go on sale) but make sure that you and your partner get the correct shoe for your arch & gait types...otherwise, you might end up spending the money that you saved from a cheap shoe, on the podiatrist.

Generally, I've found that sales clerks at big box stores like Sports Authority, Dick's and Foot Locker do not know anything about running or running shoes...they're most interested in selling you the hot new color or whatever...but if that hot new shoe is a NEUTRAL CUSHION shoe, yet you have flat feet and over-pronate, then that is NOT the shoe for you (someone that over pronates would need a MOTION CONTROL shoe). Do some research & browsing on-line before going to a brick & mortar store. It sounds like I'm making a big deal and over complicating things, but if you end up with the wrong shoe, you're gonna end up with anything from knee problems to shin splints, and then you're most likely gonna end up quitting running altogether.

I agree you can find alot of good deals in VIM, don't feel bad about getting old! I can remember buying all of my school clothes at VIM back in the day!

Modells is a good choice too, rack up enough points on your VIP card and you can get a free basketball and some other things. Sports Authority on the other hand is a huge rip off. You could also try going to champs to look at some running shoes.

Modell's is probably the least expensive everyday, but I'd also check Paragon, though a specialist, the store does have some very good deals on sale. Plus, they have just about everything in the store as they're not a general sports store.
