Citimom, hopefully when the program begins he won't have to be traveling so late at night. Does the program assign housing? If so, it's again unfortunate that they didn't assign housing closer to the subway.
Again, it sounds like a wonderful program, but people trying to help should not be put in harm's way if at all possible by being forced to wander around late at night in this area--esp since some are brand new to the city and very young.
Whats it like near the 238th St. (1 train) subway station? I know Van Cortlandt Park is to the north but is the immediate area vibrant? Is it an investment worth looking into?
The biggest excitment for 238th st. is 2 Irish bars and the Fire station.
Bailey Ave is nearby with a Hotel (hot sheets) and a drug zone nearby where the residents of The Almagamated Housing don't walk near there.
Bailey is at it's best(cleanest safest nice apts and private homes) between 238th and the end(Van Cort Pk). South of 238th is mixed Spanish and other nationalities. Factories repair shops and tenements. There is a drug zone at 233rd street at a bodega but really it's nothing compared to other Bronx nabes. Even the hotsheet Deegan motel is relatively quiet though bad things do happen there. Irish left in the area are concentrated from 238th north though they still can be found below that
The Northern Tip of Bailey Avenue does have a number of Irish, both old and young (I see 6 year olds and 66 year olds) left. It's part of Van Cortlandt Village, which has seen an increase in Whites recently, so I'd assume that the young ones recently moved here from Manhattan while the old ones have been here for yeaaaaarrrs.
i was referring to bailey towards 231st. my friend had a pizzeria on the corner there in the late 90's and it seemed at that time, the dominicans took over that section up to 238th.
What i always liked about Kingsbridge(230s near broadway) is that it looks like the areas further south (Univ Hts etc) and has their same access to transit and shopping and you get the benefit of being in a dense urban area (if that has nostalgic value to you) without having to look over your shoulder every minute because the area is relatively safe
oh, no, what i just said above I'm afraid everyone is going to call me a yuppie now!!
so in my defense i will say I don't make a lot of money, i work in an unglamourous field with the mentally ill and have for the past 17 years, but to be honest i really like where i live
I was at 231st and Broadway on Wendsday. Man does it look like ****. I mean, it's not bombed out or anything, but the graffiti and trash were very present. Even the stair street had scribble ****s on it.
