Hi all,

I am doing some research about living in Manhattan.
I have a car and don't want to sell it, even though I know living in the city I won't use it much.

Does anyone know a ballpark figure on how much long-term parking might cost? Any recommendations for specific places?

Thanks a lot.

i can't inform you about the cost of parking, but i recommend you to sell the car unless you really have much money to spend. Cause having a car in NYC is expensive and really not necessary. there are cabs, busses and trains everywhere...

Ohh Please! No need to sell your car!
Parking in the city is around $150 - $250 monthly at a lot. maybe you can find a building that has a garage. You might get charged $50-150 extra to your rent.Manhattan residents can apply to get the tax fee waived on monthly parking only. Apply here:Manhattan Resident Parking Tax Exemption

In Manhattan the cost of a garage STARTS at around $400/month. Yes, even in buildings with garages (IF there is space available).

And wait until you see how much insurance costs.

LOSE the car.

Here is the rates for Central Parking (I find way too exspensive) Central Parking System New York | New York Parking, NYC Parking, Parking New York City

There are other places that is much cheaper.
My insurance from StateFarm is $130 bucks a month. (My friend down south pays like $50 bucks). Who knows how much insurance would be if I used my Brooklyn address. (My monthly parking in Brooklyn is $150, but we drive everyday, so I don't park in there.) If you can afford it. Do it. If not its up to you. For me, we need a car, although my husband drives it mostly since he works in Elmsford. I was thinking of getting a second car, till I started working on Wall St. FORGET IT!

Default $$$

While I agree...a car is an extra expense & not needed if you are going to be in NYC, some people need one (travel to far outer boroughs/LI/NJ for work, ect).

Though I can't find it now...there was a website that would show and compare local garages on a map. That's how we picked our garage. It's a compromise between cost and distance from home. Ours was on the upper east side (far east...by the river) & about $350-400 a month...about 2 yrs ago. Don't forget about tips & holiday presents. It was by far the cheapest in the area. Maybe you'd have better luck in another area.

An outdoor parking space in Queens/Brooklyn goes for more like $100-$150 per month.

Condo owners often pay about $30K more per spot owned (also in Queens/ Brookyln).

Alternately, if you live in much less quiet areas, you can play the parking game (move your car on alternate sides). This is tough...but plenty of people do it.
