I wouldn't go there.
I agree... I'd actually want to enjoy my vacation. Haggle for food (while they spit in your ice tea)? No thanks...

If you go to Canal Street for the legitimate enterprises, as in some discount jewelry stores, some of the t-shirt shops, etc., then that's not a problem. But going to Canal for the fakes perpetuates the blight on Manhattan trade, such that every tourist seems to think is something to do on a lark, which it's not. Many of us on this board have posted as to why one should avoid the fakes, from the copyright infringement that's basically stealing, to the slave labor used to produce the goods, to the funding of organizations that have links to groups hostile to the US, to the fact that fakes are just tacky.

There are many legitimate merchants on Canal and in neighboring areas of Chinatown and SoHo that sell unique items, not all of which are terribly expensive, and would be happy to have your business. So, Canal Street can be a great place to shop for bargains, just not the fakes that give the legitimate goods a bad name.

Yes, I like the big sneaker stores and Pearl Paint.

And of course, the restaurants.
