Visting Manhattan/Times Sq (New York, York: good hotels, YMCA, eat)

I am planning to visit NY within 2 weeks, and wanted suggestions on good hotels in the area. It's me and 2 of my friends. We are not looking for something fancy, we don't plan to spend alot of time in the hotel. Something nice though, but affordable. All suggestions are appreciated!

I just got back from a day trip so I don't know hotels but definitely check out the water walk area (the area where all the ferry's drop off that come from jersey. Like where they Ellis island trip leaves from not sure of the real name), During sunset while your eating there outside with a pitcher of beer, it's amazing. And if your looking to do an observation deck I;d highly recommend doing Rockefeller Plaza over the Empire State building. Much less of a line.
