Hello, I am a 20 year old white male who currently lives in the notoriously gentrified Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Today I found an apartment in what the real estate agent referred to as "Clinton Hill," but for all I know could be Bed-Stuy. It is a nice brownstone on Willoughby Ave in between Nostrand Ave and Marcy Ave. The closest subway is the Myrtle-Willoughby G, which I know is in Bed-Stuy. It's only a short 2 minute walk away. I'm going to be moving in with my girlfriend and I want to make sure this street will be safe for us. And I've heard the whole "Brooklyn is only as safe as you make it, don't be stupid" shpiel a million times. We are both very streetsmart, albeit totally defenseless white kids. We wont exactly be coming home very late, but hypothetically, if we go out on the weekends are we going to be okay coming home at 1am? I'm looking for some articulate, honest answers! Thanks a bunch!

Protect Ya Neck
I moved from NY less than a year ago, and came back to Brooklyn about a week ago. Politically the districts are changing, but the neighborhood is the same. I see Hasidic Jews moving south from Williamsburg into Bed-Stuy, but very seldom alone. That shows change. Recent economic events makes the area not my first choice for walking alone at night, and I'm a retired LEO with an attitude. The area is not really that bad as long as you use your street smarts and common sense.

I grew up in that area and there were areas in bed-stuy which were WAY worse!! But I have not lived there since I graduated from high school eleven years ago.

that part of bed-stuy isnt the worst, but it isnt exactly the best either.....the only way to gauge if you would be comfortable is to go around there on a friday or saturday night and see if you can tolerate it.

It figures a real estate agent would tell you that was Clinton Hill. They'll say anything if they think they can smell a deal. But Willoughby and Nostrand isn't nearly the same as it was only ten years ago. That is to say, it's much improved.

That is Bed-Stuy but it might as well be Clinton Hill. That area is not the Hood anymore. In fact IMO there is not much of the hood left in NYC anywhere these days. Not saying it is a bad or good thing. But when it comes to safety and crime NYC is honestly much better off than any other large city in the country. Bed-Stuy is considered a bad area on this forum but compared to most American inner cities it definitely one of the safest.
