What do you think is the best way to travel to LI from NYC? I'll be visiting a friend there next week, in hicksville. Do you think I should drive? Take the train? I've also heard there is a bus that drives into the island.
Are there any good sites that give specific directions?

The LIRR is very efficient, but I'd suggest driving depending on where exactly your friend lives. If it's not close to the train station, it's not always that easy to get there without a car in LI.

I would say car as well...LIRR is easy yeah, but it isn't cheap and it isn't very reliable. If you are going to a friend's house, maybe reliability isn't important to you...but i take it to work everyday and it barely gets to penn station when it's supposed to...annoying.

I don't know anything about the bus. I know the city has it's own bus system, and so does LI but i wasn't aware there was a bus that went out to the island from the city.

All in all, without traffic, it's essentially the same amount of time...an hour whether on the train or driving. Can't guarantee you wont hit traffic though.

Good luck & have fun with whatever you choose.

If your friend can pick you up by car at the Hicksville LIRR station, I suggest taking the train. If possible take the train when the rates are off-peak and it will be less expensive.

Also, buy your ticket @ Penn Station...they jack up the fares if you buy it from the conductor aboard the train.

Id second that....the train is kewl but for the most part its a hassle getting from the station to your destination...either have your friend pick you up from the station or drive your own car.
