I'm going to visit NYC in about a month. I do not want to stay right in the city, as the hotels are entirely too expensive for my little group. I was thinking maybe Flushing? What can you tell me about Flushing? Is it a fairly safe community for 4 women who have no idea how to get around in NYC? How far from Flushing to Manhattan?
Flushing covers a pretty wide area, so it depends on what part of Flushing you are looking at? Also, what made you consider Flushing as opposed to other areas?
What some people consider to be the "heart" of Flushing, is around the Main St. area, where it is very commercialized and is a heavy Asian community. It is considered by some as the "Chinatown" of Queens. There is a Sheraton hotel there that is decent and you would need to take the 7 train into midtown Manhattan, which can take about 30 - 45 minutes. However, just a note as the 7 train is not very dependable due to constant track work. In terms of safety, Flushing is pretty safe, but gets a little isolated at night. It's by no means dangerous, but safetly is also based on perception - so for 4 out of town women, it might not "seem" safe.
there's a hotel in jamaica (not flushing but) that is cheap, in a decent (IMO) area and it is very clean. easy access to the F train (which is reliable). its on 164th st/hillside av.
easy access to the F train on 169th st or on parsons blvd.
Try the Holiday Inn Express in Long Island City, Queens, 3 blocks away from the #7 subway train to Manhattan starting at $111 a night. (Long Island City is much closer to Manhattan than Flushing & Jamaica.)
Flushing is a strange place to pick unless you know someone who lives there & can set you up with free rooms. There are many places much closer to NYC that you can stay at.
It'll take you a little less than 1 hr to get to Manhattan from Flushing... including wait time for train, ect. That said, if you back/forth once a day: it's not THAT bad.
I would prioritize staying near (close walking distance) to a train.
Thank you all for your suggestions. I looked into it further and we've decided to stay in Long Island City. Thanks again for all your help. Our trip is finally getting closer and we are so excited!
